The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) was signed by President Trump and his fellow leaders at the G20 in Argentina. The accord modernizes the decades-old NAFTA and is chock full of meaningful provisions that will help American small businesses boost exports and safeguard their intellectual property (IP). Congress needs to approve USMCA as soon as possible.

Small businesses drive the U.S. economy, and they certainly dominate trade with Mexico and Canada. Thirty million small businesses employ more than 58 million American workers. They also account for roughly half of U.S. GDP. Many small businesses are looking to expand into global markets, and agreements like the USMCA will lower costs and provide more certainty and opportunity. See more

China isn’t the only trade issue Washington D.C. is working on.

At some point this year, Congress is expected to vote on the USMCA agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada. The agreement still needs an up or down vote from both chambers of Congress.

“In terms of votes within the caucus, I can’t tell you,” said House Ag. Committee Chairman, Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota). “All I can tell you is I’m for it and I’m doing what I can to help get it passed.” See more

Wall Street attention is fixated on what appears to be the final stages of U.S.-China trade talks, but for many American companies the ongoing negotiations are second to another priority: Getting Congress to approve the new trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Known as the USMCA, the White House and top business groups have launched an all-out assault on Congress to try to assuage concerns from lawmakers over the deal’s enforcement mechanisms and pharmaceutical protections, as well as educate new members on the intricate details of the update to the North American Free Trade Agreement. World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara has joined a nationwide coalition of companies and associations urging lawmakers to ratify the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement.

The international trade organization is now part of the USMCA Coalition. Launched in late February, the coalition is comprised of 300-plus entities ranging from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the American Farm Bureau Federation to Google.

WTCBN President Craig Turner said it’s critical for the organization to show support for the USMCA, given WTCBN’s mission to represent businesses on both sides of the border.

The United States, Canada and Mexico finalized a sweeping new trade deal late Sunday, just hours before their Oct. 1 deadline. President Trump was up early Monday tweeting that the agreement is “a great deal for all three countries,” and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday night that it was a “good day for Canada.”

The deal is expected to take effect around Jan. 1, 2020. Congress has to approve it, a process that will take months, but confirmation looks likely, given that Republicans are pleased Canada got on board and some Democrats are pleased with the stronger labor provisions.

When it comes to trade, America’s farmers and ranchers know a good deal when they see one. After private and public analysis, it is clear that the recently negotiated U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement is good news at a time when we need it most. Not only does USMCA help lock in the quadrupling of U.S. agricultural exports to our neighbors accomplished over the last 25 years, but it also includes reform of a number of trade rules and is projected to further increase our exports to two of our most important markets. In this time of economic challenge for agriculture, it is vital that Congress ratify this trade deal now.

 PHOENIX – In their first official public appearance together, Gov. Doug Ducey and Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Martha Bárcena discussed the depths of Arizona-Mexico ties and stressed the importance of ratifying the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which is meant to replace the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement.

Bárcena told a luncheon of government and business leaders from both sides of the border that one of the most important tasks for the administration of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is the congressional ratification of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which was signed in September 2018.

“The ratification of the USMCA is key,” Bárcena said. “If the agreement gets rejected, it will send a very bad signal for relationships with Mexico and Canada.” See more

LEXINGTON — The Council for Economic Development, CED, held a town hall meeting at Central Community College on Saturday, March 16 discussing international trade and how it effects Dawson County. Among the items discussed, the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement, USMCA, was heavily focused on and the consequences of it not passing. The trade war and tariff impacts on local farmers was also touched on.

 

Andy Jobman, vice president of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association, was recently in Washington D.C. and spoke about his time there. “The nuts and bolts for USMCA are all in place,” he said, “The goal is to try and pass this before August, there could be some really bad exposure between now and August, the stakes for agriculture couldn’t be higher.”
